Fuente del Maestre is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest in the category “historic ensemble”. In the historic centre, two main squares are connected by Calle Pizarra. One of these squares is traditionally paved and represents the typical square layout of Baja Extremadura.
Culture
The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria was built in the 15th century and completed in the 16th century. It combines Gothic-Mudéjar and Renaissance elements. Its main altarpiece was begun in 1719 by the Sevillian woodcarver Sebastián Jiménez and completed in 1756.
The Palacio del Gran Maestre has two storeys and was built predominantly in the Mudéjar style. It is arranged around a courtyard with a double arcade gallery made of exposed brick. The Palacio del Gran Maestre was the residence of the grand master of the Order of Santiago, Suárez de Figueroa. The Iglesia de San Juan has been a church since the late 15th century; before that, it was a Jewish synagogue.
History
Fuente del Corro is a square enclosure built of marble, accessed via three stairways. At the centre of Fuente del Corro there is a basin with a marble surround, from which water was formerly drawn. Fuente del Corro is the fountain after which Fuente del Maestre was named. An approximately 200-metre-long section of the medieval town wall has been preserved in Fuente del Maestre.
The squares, religious buildings, palace architecture, water source and wall remains represent different focal points within the town’s history. For your own planning, these themes can be considered separately without having to combine them into a single itinerary.
Events and museums
The Plaza de Toros of Fuente del Maestre hosts events in addition to bullfights. Its exterior is square; windows from the project for a cavalry barracks can also be seen. The Fiestas del Stmo. Cristo de las Misericordias are traditionally celebrated from 13 to 17 September. The festivities include a daytime fair, bullfights, music festivals and a night fair.
The José Gordillo permanent exhibition comprises approximately 50 works. The Museo de Instrumentos de Música Tradicional (Aquilino Vicente) contains more than 100 instruments and displays instruments from the 18th century to the present day. The buildings, collections and festival programme therefore differ in period, form and character and can be weighed against one another when choosing personal priorities.
Nature
Los Diez Ojos is a natural area within the municipality of Fuente del Maestre. The municipal land in this natural area is flooded by an extension of the Embalse de Villalba. This natural setting complements the town’s historical and cultural attractions with an independent landscape dimension.
