Higuera de Vargas: Culture, Nature and Historic Trails

Culture and Townscape

The Centru Estremeñu de las Fronteras is a cultural centre about borders; its content is available in Extremaduran, Spanish, English and Portuguese.

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Concepción is a whitewashed masonry church from the 16th century with a basilica-style layout and three naves.

Its tower shows Portuguese architectural influences and has a granite portal with a keel-arch-shaped arch.

A circular hiking route passes through varied landscapes with plains, holm oak and cork oak stands, rockroses, hills and open terrain. The two sights along this route are abandoned talc mines and a pre-Roman settlement on the Sierra La Encinosa, with partially dilapidated dry-stone huts.

A signposted circular hiking route runs partly along the banks of the Río Alcarrache and passes historic grain mills formerly powered by hydropower, as well as a decommissioned hydroelectric power station that once supplied Higuera de Vargas with electricity.

A circular hiking route begins and ends at the Travesía de Carretera de Alconchel, near Calle Pablo Neruda in Higuera de Vargas.
