Carmonita: Dolmen, Sierra and Festivities

In the center of Carmonita stands the Iglesia de Santa María de Magdalena, a Late Gothic building. Its construction chronology begins in 1549–1551 and extends to the middle of the 17th century. The Iglesia Parroquial de La Magdalena is designated as cultural heritage with integral protection status.

Culture and History

The Dolmen de Carmonita is a megalithic monument, more precisely a dolmen with a long passage. It consists of an oval chamber with ten orthostats; the diameter of the mound that covered it is also visible around the monument. The Crucero Ctra. Cordobilla (Cementerio) is likewise designated as cultural heritage with integral protection status. Pozo de las Viñas is one of Carmonita’s sights.

Trails and Landscape

The Ruta del Dolmen begins in Carmonita and is an easy circular route. Along it, visitors can see the Dolmen de Carmonita; the monument is only 2 km from the municipality. There are tables and benches there for resting and having a meal. The route can be cycled, although a short section of around 15 meters may be muddy during rainy periods.

The Ruta Sierra de la Lombriz begins along a well-signposted path between cork oaks, while the Dolmen de Carmonita remains on the right. After an ascent on firm ground, it follows the winding paths of the Sierra de la Lombriz; along the way, there are views of the Horno Tejero and Boquerón reservoirs. Three viewpoints offer views of Casas de Don Antonio, Albalá, Alcuéscar, Montánchez and other places.

The Mirador del Lito Blanco is designed as a linear out-and-back route and leads through holm oak and cork oak forests as well as along winding paths through scrubland. The final section climbs steeply from the Puerto de San Blas to the 697-meter-high geodetic summit in the Sierra de la Lombriz. This is known as Lito Blanco or colloquially as “LITO BLANCO” and was built on a whitish-looking rock. The Ruta Peñas Blancas is easy to manage, but leads through private fincas where fighting bulls roam freely.

Nature

The slopes of the Sierra de San Pedro around Carmonita are covered by cork oak forests and dense stands of Mediterranean woodland and scrubland. The vegetation is home to a rich and diverse wild fauna, including game species such as red deer and wild boar.

Since 2007, Carmonita has celebrated the “Matanza Popular” as a traditional festival in March at the finca “El Empastao.” During the event, local volunteers cook Migas in the morning at the municipal finca, which are offered free of charge to all participants.
