Castilblanco: Holiday apartment between nature and tradition

Castilblanco combines distinctive landscapes, a historic townscape and the Camino a Guadalupe pilgrimage route. The Guadalupejo runs through the municipality and was declared an Ecological and Biodiversity Corridor in 2003.

Nature

The municipality includes the last Rañas, low hill ranges that descend from the Sierra de las Villuercas towards the Guadiana. Arroyo Grande is a natural area behind Castilblanco; a path leading downhill from Plaza Rodrigo Martín takes you there. Puente Verde refers to a green area rich in water and vegetation in the landscape of the Guadalupejo River and can be reached via the road to Alía. Trails and pilgrimage tradition

The Camino a Guadalupe is a 17.20 km linear out-and-back route of low difficulty. The walking time is approximately 4 hours and 5 minutes, while the cycling time is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes; the elevation difference is 80 m. There is a birdwatching point along the Camino. GR markings are present on the sections that coincide with the Camino de Levante a Guadalupe route. The pilgrimage route begins at the municipal San Matías hostel near the Ermita of the same name in Castilblanco.

At the bridge closest to Castilblanco, there are two visible access roads, identifiable by the tyre tracks of cars. The Palacio de Cíjara route is also signposted there; it leads to the Cíjara Reservoir. Culture and townscape

Two historic districts in the town centre preserve small whitewashed houses with roofs made of Arabic tiles, shaping the historic streetscape. A religious chapel dating from the 16th century stands next to an old Mesta livestock trail that was used as a resting place for livestock. A museum is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting historic traditional objects.

The traditional Los Ranchos pilgrimage takes place in Castilblanco on 3 May and leads from Castilblanco to the Ermita de San Matías. The participants then gather for three days in the rural landscapes around the chapel. The gathering includes Caldereta de cordero, Migas extremeñas, wine and homemade Aguardiente, as well as an auction of traditional sweets.
