San Vicente de Alcántara lies between the protected Sierra de San Pedro in Extremadura and the Sierra de São Mamede in Portugal. Landscape and nature

The Sierra de San Pedro associated with San Vicente de Alcántara is protected as a ZIR, ZEPA and LIC. Part of the municipality belongs to the urban ZEPA Cernícalo Primilla. The “Alas” Interpretation Centre presents four ecosystems of the Sierra: rocky cliffs, cork oak forests, Mediterranean mountain and scrubland, and dehesas. Through sensory interpretation, it also introduces visitors to the natural surroundings of the Sierra de San Pedro.

The Celestino Ramajo Wildlife Observatory makes it possible to observe birds such as the black stork, Spanish imperial eagle, and black and griffon vultures. From the Cordel de San Vicente, the observatory can be reached via a footpath less than 1.5 kilometres long. The Sierra de San Pedro associated with the town also offers opportunities for fishing, hiking and nature photography.

Near the town centre is Las Charcas, with two ponds for sport fishing as well as an area for walking and relaxation. The different route lengths and types of activity can be easily compared when planning your own day.

Hiking and cycling routes

The Ruta Senderista Ciudad del Corcho is an approximately 18-kilometre circular hike through rural landscapes around San Vicente de Alcántara. For cycling enthusiasts, there is the annual Ruta BTT Ciudad del Corcho mountain bike route, organised by the “La Catalina Sanvicenteña” Cycling Club. It starts at Parque de España and ends at Plaza del Cristo in San Vicente de Alcántara.

Another route from San Vicente de Alcántara leads from the Ermita de San Cristóbal via the Cañada Real de Sancha Brava, the former route to Villar del Rey. This places the circular hike, mountain bike route and historic path alongside one another as different ways of exploring the landscape.

Culture and history

The Museo de Identidad del Corcho has a permanent exhibition and is integrated into Extremadura’s museum network. It documents the arrival of the cork industry in San Vicente de Alcántara in 1858 and explains the extraction of cork, its processing and the manufacture of cork stoppers.

In the Iglesia Parroquial de San Vicente Mártir, the Baroque baldachin altarpiece of the main altar dates from the 18th century; in 1868, it was brought to San Vicente de Alcántara from the Conventual de San Benito de Alcántara. The church’s main portal is considered one of the few, and possibly even the only, example of a Rococo portal in Extremadura.

The Ermita de Santa Ana is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the category of monument. Its wall paintings are dated to around 1760. The Dolmen del Alcornocón belongs to the group of prehistoric monuments and is considered the best-preserved dolmen in the group of San Vicente de Alcántara.

Castillo de Mayorga is located 13 kilometres from San Vicente de Alcántara on a hill in the Sierra de San Pedro. Castillo de Piedrabuena combines medieval Gothic and Renaissance elements with Romantic and Neo-Gothic alterations from the 20th century.

Festivals and regional specialities

The Corpus Christi celebration in San Vicente de Alcántara is recognised in Extremadura as a festival of tourist interest. For the procession, the streets are decorated with large carpets featuring floral motifs and drawings.

The Feria Internacional del Corcho is held every two years in April by the Ayuntamiento de San Vicente de Alcántara. The programme includes exhibitions and workshops, as well as offerings related to gastronomy, handicrafts and nature.

Several pastry shops in San Vicente de Alcántara currently offer a wide selection of traditional sweets. These include various types of perrunillas, sponge cakes, empanadas, mantecados, yemas, mostrencas, Easter pastries, bollas de chicharrones, cocos and joriños.
