Discover Llerena: Churches, Plaza and Ruta del Rey Jayón

Llerena does not define its history by a single era. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Granada combines Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles. The Iglesia de Santiago Apostol is a late Gothic building in the Hispano-Flemish style; D. Alonso de Cárdenas founded it as his burial place.

Culture and history

The Casa Maestral was built as the residence of the Maestre of the Order of Santiago in the city. Llerena’s historic district contains numerous Mudéjar-style residential buildings known as Casas Mudéjares. The Convento e Iglesia de Santa Clara is now the only one of Llerena’s eight convents that has been preserved as a convent.

Today’s Cultural Complex “La Merced” includes the La Merced convent and church, as well as the former palace Casa Palacio de Recaudación de Impuestos de la Mesa Maestral. The chapel of the former Jesuit college is a Jesuit building whose construction was completed in 1715. Llerena’s Plaza is considered possibly the most representative example of a Baroque events venue in the region and is enclosed by arcades on its other sides. The building houses the Museo Histórico Ciudad de Llerena.

In March, Llerena hosts the Matanza Tradicional Extremeña y Feria del Embutido, which is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional. At this event, visitors can enjoy migas, typical sweet treats, pork dishes and a large stew.

Hiking and the surrounding area

The Ruta del Rey Jayón is organised by the municipalities of Llerena, Fuente del Arco, Reina and Casas de Reina, together with the Asociación de Senderismo Tomillo y Orégano de Llerena (ASTOLL). The route covers 24 kilometres through the Campiña Sur and ends in Llerena. The Ribera de los Molinos runs through the area around Llerena.
