Azuaga – Churches, Nature Trails and Historic Sites

Construction of the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Consolación began in Azuaga at the end of the 15th century. The church is an example of Elizabethan Gothic architecture with influences from Portuguese Gothic, or the Manueline style, as well as Renaissance elements.

Culture

In 1993, the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Consolación was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the monument category.

The Museo Etnográfico de Azuaga belongs to the “Museos de Identidad” network of the Junta de Extremadura. It presents everyday objects connected with the ethnographic heritage of Azuaga and the region.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a 15th-century Mudéjar church. The general chapter of the Order of Santiago took place in this church, where Don Alonso de Cárdenas was elected grand master of the order.

The Iglesia del Cristo del Humilladero was completed in 1752; its architectural style is late Extremaduran Baroque with Andalusian influences.

The Castillo de Miramontes is a fortress probably of Islamic origin. Archaeological work there uncovered a Roman cistern and a Roman road.

The cultural sites focus on different aspects: at the Consolación, the combination of several architectural styles takes centre stage, while the museum documents everyday culture. Merced and Cristo del Humilladero add Mudéjar and late Baroque to the picture; Miramontes leads from the history of fortifications to Roman archaeology.

Those wishing to organise the historical themes can distinguish between religious architecture, everyday culture, the history of fortifications and archaeological traces.

Nature

The Corredor Ecológico y de Biodiversidad Río Bembézar runs through the municipal areas of Azuaga and Granja de Torrehermosa.

The Ruta del Zurrón passes through lush scrubland and offers views of the Sierra Morena as well as a panorama of Azuaga.

The hiking route to the Observatorio Ornitológico de la Sierra de Azuaga runs entirely through the “La Sierra” estate. Since 2002, the estate has been protected as a Parque Periurbano de Conservación y Ocio and incorporated into Extremadura’s network of protected natural areas.

The natural attractions also place different emphasis on different features: the Río Bembézar represents an ecological connection across two municipal areas, the Ruta del Zurrón combines scrubland with views, and the route to the Sierra de Azuaga passes through an area protected since 2002.

The routes mentioned differ in their landscape, views and protected-area context; these features help when comparing different day-trip plans.

Events and Routes

The Plaza de Toros de Azuaga is currently also used for theatre performances and music festivals.

The Azuaga y sus Iglesias route passes three churches along a single street and combines Mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

The Ruta Nocturna de Azuaga is a free, guided nighttime event featuring theatre performances, dances and music. It takes place on the last Friday in July.
