Pedra: Romanesque Church and Trails

Pedra lies at an altitude of 1,120 m at the foot of Serrat dels Gats in the Vall de Pedra. The village is also situated at the foot of the Moixeró limestone massif. Together with the Serra del Cadí, Moixeró forms the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park is the landscape area in which the church is located. The three named landscape references – Vall de Pedra, Serrat dels Gats and Moixeró – describe the immediate location of the village.

Landscape

Sant Julià de Pedra stands on a rocky promontory and overlooks the Batllia plain. The Romanesque church is located within the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, where it is one of the examples of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture. The rocky promontory is therefore both the site of the church building and the point from which the view extends across the Batllia plain. At the church site, the view over the plain, the natural park and the mountain setting on Moixeró thus come together directly.

Culture

Sant Julià de Pedra has a trapezoidal floor plan with a single nave and a semicircular apse. A presbyteral space in the form of a transept projects in front of the building. The oldest part of the church may have been built at the end of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th century. The floor plan, nave, apse and projecting transept constitute the church’s preserved architectural features.

Trails

The Ruta de l’Obaga includes Sant Julià de Pedra as one of four churches. This route is not recommended for people with reduced mobility, as access to the church of Pedra is difficult.

A side trail leads from Colomina to Pedra and the Romanesque church of Sant Julià in approximately 10 minutes. Pedra is also one of the designated stops on municipal Route 21, “Vall de Pi – Bor – Pedra – Baltarga”.

Territori Cerdanya 360 is a 178 km-long hiking route. It is circular and passes along traditional paths, through villages and valleys, and to notable places. The route crosses a mid- and high-mountain landscape.

History

The Camí dels Capellans was formerly used by members of the clergy who walked from Bellver to Pedra and Bor. The section between Riu and Bellver is known as the Camí dels Capellans. In the past, members of the clergy travelled from Talló to celebrate Mass in Coborriu, Beders, Bor, Pedra and Riu. This historical use by members of the clergy links the trail sections between Bellver, Riu and Pedra with the former routes from Talló to the aforementioned places of worship.
