Arties: Cultural Heritage, Mountains and Festivals
Arties between Cultural Heritage and Mountain Landscapes
Arties combines protected cultural heritage with mountain trails, lively festival days and thermal waters. The Sant Joan d’Arties church was classified as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (BCIL) and placed under special protection because of its historical and heritage value. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Arties can combine different priorities when planning: culture, activity and relaxation can all be considered side by side.
Culture, Festivals and Local Traditions
The Tarò Festival of Arties takes place every year on 23 June, the eve of Saint John’s Day. During the Tarò ritual, a fir trunk is burned and pulled through the streets and squares of Arties while participants jump over the flames. The fixed date and unusual format give the trip a clear cultural focus.
The pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Pelegrín takes place every year on 25 June as part of Arties’s patron saint celebrations dedicated to Saint John. Participants walk to the chapel, attend a mass and are then given bread with cheese. Alongside the Tarò Festival, this provides another specific date with its own tradition in the calendar.
In the wider regional surroundings of Artiés are three churches: Esglesia de Sant Esteve de Ginast, Esglesia de Sant Climent and Pilaret de Sant Urbà.
Mountains and Trails around Arties
The trail to La Restanca begins in Arties and follows the Valarties track to the car park at the Ressèc bridge. From there, it takes two hours on foot each way to the La Restanca mountain refuge. This makes it possible to plan a hiking day with a clear estimate of the time required.
Monte Calvo, a mountain, is located in the immediate surroundings of Artiés. The Tuc dera Pincèla summit is also nearby. The Tuc Nere and Tuc de Somont summits are likewise located around Artiés.
Cycling, Elevation Gain and Thermal Waters
For a cycling tour, the Arties–Garòs BTT route connects Arties and Garòs via lightly trafficked dirt roads; it is considered quiet and family-friendly. Eth Taro d’Arties is 330 metres long, overcomes an elevation difference of 100 metres and has a difficulty rating of 4K+.
Banhs d’Arties is a recreational thermal spa based on sulphurous water that emerges near the site at a temperature of 39 °C. When choosing a holiday apartment in Arties, the preferred daily rhythm may be decisive: a hiking day to La Restanca, a leisurely cycling route, a festival date or time at the thermal spa each points to a different type of trip planning.
