Puigcerdá – Lake, Culture and Trails
The Estany de Puigcerdà is an artificial lake fed by the irrigation channel of the Querol River. Visitors use it as a peaceful recreational area with walking paths, boats and green spaces in its surroundings. The landscape ensemble around the Estany includes Parc Schierbeck, Font del Cúcuru, Bosquet and Passeig de la Sèquia. Estany del Torniquet is also known as Puigcerdà’s small lake and is surrounded by Camí dels Enamorats. The Raür River forms the border between Puigcerdà and France.
Culture and Townscape
The Museu Cerdà houses a permanent exhibition on Casa Cerdana in its ground-floor gallery. The exhibition explores the development of architecture and family life in the Cerdanya house over approximately a century and a half, from the mid-19th to the end of the 20th century. Another permanent exhibition at the Museu Cerdà is dedicated to the medieval monasteries of Puigcerdà and the enclosed monastery of Puigcerdà, which now houses the Museu Cerdà.
The Arxiu Comarcal de la Cerdanya is located on the second floor of the former Sant Domènec monastery in Puigcerdà. The Teatre del Casino Ceretà is located in the centre and is a cultural heritage site of architectural and historical interest dating from the 19th century. The Gothic church of Santo Domingo dates from the 15th century and contains wall paintings. The Gothic Santa Maria bell tower belonged to the former Santa Maria church, which no longer exists today.
Signposted Trails
The Petjades Culturals is a signposted route through the town centre and old town, with 13 points of interest. A variant of the Camí de Sant Jaume via Sant Jaume de Rigolisa can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. A variant of the Camí de Sant Jaume joins the route at Sant Jaume de Rigolisa in Puigcerdà. The Camí de Sant Jaume is considered an easy route with a gentle gradient and suitable for all groups. The Camí dels Enamorats is a flat path in the Senders de Cerdanya network.
Regional Cuisine and Festivals
The Festa del Trinxat in Puigcerdà is a culinary festival centred on trinxat, a typical dish of Cerdanya. At the Festa del Trinxat, Trinxat de Cerdanya is prepared with winter cabbage and mashed potatoes and bound with the cooking juices from roasted pork. Local products such as winter cabbage, potatoes from Cerdanya, cheese and cured meats are also presented at the Festa del Trinxat.
The Festa de l’Estany celebrated its 140th anniversary; the municipality considers it one of Puigcerdà’s great symbols. For the Festa de l’Estany 2026, a performance of “La llegenda de la Vella de l’Estany” with the Inestable Ceretana de Teatre, the Associació Cerdanya Musical and Pas a Pas Gym Dance was scheduled for 9:15 p.m. at Parc Schierbeck.
Getting Around Puigcerdà
The R3 line operated by Rodalia de Barcelona connects the Barcelona area with Puigcerdà and the Pyrenees. The Oficina de Turisme de Puigcerdà is located at the Campanar de Santa Maria. Placeta de les Monges, also called Plaça de l’Ajuntament, offers a viewpoint over Cerdanya.
