Age: Sant Julià d'Age, Hiking Trails and Festival Dates
Hiking
The Puigcerdà–Sant Marc–Vilallobent–Age–Puigcerdà circular hike follows a loop through several named places. It is a moderately difficult, 9.42-kilometre route with a duration of two hours. The loop starts and ends in Puigcerdà and passes through Age. Further clearly named points along the route include Carrer Palau, Sant Julià, and the crossing over the Segre. Current trail conditions should be checked before setting out, especially if a river crossing is part of the route.
The trail leads to Age via Carrer Palau, passes Sant Julià, and then leaves the village in the direction of Puigcerdà. On the route, hikers cross the River Segre via a bridge suitable for pedestrians and then continue towards Age-Montagut.
Age is also part of the eleventh stage of the Transpirenaica from Planoles to Puigcerdà. After Vilallobent, the stage reaches the village at approximately stage time 7:00 a.m.; Age lies before the stage destination of Puigcerdà. The stage thus connects Planoles as its starting point with Puigcerdà as its destination and passes through Vilallobent and Age along the way. This stage has no technical difficulties.
Festivals
Puigcerdà's local festival calendar lists two dates for Age in 2026: 7 January as Sant Julià and 12 June as Festa d'Age. The January date is designated Sant Julià, while the June date is entered as Festa d'Age.
The 2012 Festa Major d'Age programme included a popular race, a solemn mass, an aperitif, and dance events in the afternoon and evening. The festival programme therefore included sporting, religious, and social elements.
Sant Julià d'Age has a Gothic side chapel with a rib vault. The church's building history was also shaped by an intervention in 1791: at Sant Julià d'Age, the apse was removed and the façade was built where the presbytery had previously been. This reversed the original orientation of the nave. The side chapel and the changes to the apse, façade, and presbytery belong to the same building history.
