Lloret de Mar – Beaches, History and Holiday Apartments

In the centre of Lloret de Mar lies Lloret Beach, a beach more than 1.5 kilometres long. Two sections of the GR92 Mediterranean Trail, a 583-kilometre long-distance hiking trail, run through the town. It leads along the entire Catalan coast and showcases coves, beaches and landscapes.

Coast

At 700 metres, Platja de Fenals is the second-largest beach in Lloret de Mar. The cove in which it is located is protected from the winds by a massif. This cove is separated from the town centre and Lloret Beach.

Nature

The beaches of Santa Cristina and Treumal are located in the area of the Ermita de Santa Cristina. Most of the ten-hectare site consists of natural Mediterranean woodland with labelled plant species and native fauna.

History and Culture

In 1919, the Marqués de Roviralta commissioned the project for the Jardins de Santa Clotilde from the then young landscape architect and architect Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí.

Puig de Castellet is an Iberian archaeological site that was established around 250 BC and finally abandoned around 200 BC.

The Museu del Mar is housed in the former Casa Garriga, a building on Passeig Verdaguer dating from the second half of the 19th century. The tour of the Museu del Mar is divided into five sections. It covers coastal shipping in the Mediterranean through to deep-sea shipping across the Atlantic.

The origins of Castell de Sant Joan are linked to the origins of Lloret de Mar. In the 11th century, the lands demarcated as Loredo were under the rule of Sicardis de Lloret (1031–1103).

Traditions

A maritime procession takes place every year in Lloret de Mar on 24 July. During this procession, the statue and a relic of the saint of Lloret are taken to Santa Cristina Beach.

The Ball de Plaça, also known as Dansa de les Almorratxes, is an old ceremonial dance. Its performance is scheduled for the afternoon of 24 July.

The S’Amorra Amorra regatta is a rowing race connected with the Santa Cristina procession. Nine clubs take part in it, representing the former guilds.

24 July is therefore a firmly designated date in Lloret de Mar’s annual calendar: the procession and dance are assigned to this date, while the regatta is connected with the procession.
