The Riera del Merlès is a protected natural area; access has been restricted since 2017. Its entire course features clear water as well as numerous pools and waterfalls. Its headwaters are spread between Sant Jaume de Frontanyà and les Llosses.

Townscape and History

Les Llosses has no urban centre. Houses and farmsteads are scattered throughout the municipality in eight local areas corresponding to the former parishes. The history of the area includes La Farga de Bebié, a textile colony founded in 1895 by les Llosses and Montesquiu.

Culture and Historic Sites

Santa Maria de les Llosses has a single-nave interior with a pointed barrel vault and Lombard arcades on the outside. Santa Maria de Matamala originally had a single-nave interior with a barrel vault and apse. In the southern part of the municipality lies the Santa Margarida de Vinyoles sanctuary, east of Puig Cornador on a hill in the Serra de Vinyoles at an altitude of 1,206 metres.

Santa Margarida de Vinyoles is considered the chapel of the former Castell de la Guàrdia de Ripoll; its site lies below the sanctuary complex. The remains of Castell de la Guàrdia are located near Mas del Castell on a small hill in the Serra de Santa Margarida, on the southern side of the valley below the Santa Margarida de Vinyoles sanctuary.

Trails through the Landscape

Route 18 to Puig Cornador circles and climbs the Serra de Puig Cornador to an altitude of 1,232 metres. It begins at the junction with the C-26, level with the town hall of les Llosses. The Route de la riera de les Llosses connects Santa Maria de Matamala with Ripoll, follows the course of the Riera de les Llosses for much of its length and passes through mountain landscapes, pastures and dense forests.

The route “Entre antigues parròquies de Gombrèn, Campdevànol i les Llosses” follows a path formerly used by shepherds and farmers. On the route “Matamala i les Llosses per antics camins de ferradura”, you can leave your car at the entrance to Santa Maria de Matamala in a large unpaved area.

Regional Specialities and Festivals

At Mas El Pujol de Dachs in les Llosses, Formatges del Pujol-Orra offers a farm visit with cheese tasting that requires a reservation; booking and advance payment are required. “Tastets de formatge del Ripollès” offers guided tastings of cheeses and products from Ripollès and/or the surrounding area.

The programme of the Festa Major de Matamala includes a pyrotechnic festival announcement, performances and children’s activities, dancing and a concert, a solemn mass, a football match and an omelette competition.
