Arbancón – Discover History, Festivals and Nature

The Botarga is an integral part of Arbancón’s festival calendar every year. It is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial and as intangible cultural heritage.

Culture and History

The irregularly laid-out main square features a large stone-carved fountain with four spouts. It originally served as a picota, or pillory.

The Iglesia de San Benito Abad is a 16th-century building. Its main altar was created in 1656 by the painter Matías Jimeno and the sculptor and altarpiece maker Pedro Castillejo.

By prior appointment, the municipality of Arbancón offers guided tours of the Iglesia de San Benito Abad, including the opportunity to view the main altar.

The Ermita de la Soledad houses sculptures of the Virgen de la Soledad, Jesucristo Nazareno, Cruz Acuestas and Santo Sepulcro. A visit is particularly recommended during Semana Santa.

The former school building houses the Museo de Historia y Costumbres de Arbancón, which presents the traditions and history of the municipality.

The Teatro Las Candelas belongs to the performing arts network of Castilla-La Mancha and offers a cultural programme throughout the year.

Festivals and Events

Every year, Arbancón hosts the Jornada del Privilegio de Villa. The festival commemorates the title of Villa that Felipe V granted Arbancón in 1721.

The Jornada features historical figures, a handicrafts market, medieval dinners, historical re-enactments and street theatre.

The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Salceda take place in Arbancón during the last week of August.

In summer, more than 20,000 candles illuminate every corner of the town on two evenings.

Nature and Activities

Arbancón is located in the Parque Natural de la Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. Several well-signposted hiking trails run through the nearby area, between pine forests and attractive landscapes.

Behind the Frontón is a covered climbing wall, available for climbing as part of the area’s adventure tourism activities.

The local company “Rutas 4x4 Sierra Norte” offers off-road vehicle tours. Visitors can discover remote villages, rural Romanesque buildings, Black Architecture and the surrounding landscapes.

Cuisine

The Fuente Vieja is located on the bank of the Arroyo Salcedo, has landscaped gardens and was restored by local residents.
