Culture and History

The Cerro de la Ermita hiking trail passes the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the Fuente de la Villa and the Iglesia de San Andrés. The Fuente de la Villa, also known as Fuente de los Trece Caños, has been documented since 1557 and is considered one of the best-known symbols of Albalate de Zorita. The present structure dates from the 17th century, is designed in the Renaissance style and was extended at the beginning of the 20th century.

Construction of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios began in 1655 and was probably completed in 1676. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is a rectangular Baroque building with a Herrerian portal. The Iglesia de San Andrés is a Gothic church from the late 15th century and houses the revered Cruz del Perro, the patron saint of Albalate de Zorita, in the Capilla de Santa Cruz. The ruins of the Ermita de Cubillas are located in the cemetery a short distance from the town of Albalate de Zorita.

Festivals and Customs

The Pasión Viviente takes place on the afternoon of Easter Saturday and is recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. It depicts the Passion of Jesus in 13 scenes with live performers and is held as an annual performance.

On 3 February, the feast day of San Blas, the saint is accompanied in a procession after the main mass; this includes a dance by the Botargas and dancers, who deliver praises to the saint to the sound of drums and large castanets. The Muestra Folk has been held in Albalate de Zorita since 1998 and combines traditional music with tastings, handicrafts, exhibitions, children's games and a gathering of the Botargas and dancers.
