Nature

Yémeda lies in the Cabriel Valley between mountainous terrain and pine forests. At the same time, the village is located in the protected Valle del Cabriel natural area, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network as the “Valle del Cabriel” Site of Community Importance and the “Hoces del Cabriel, Guadazaón y Ojos de Moya” Special Protection Area for birds. The landscape combines extensive pine forests, steep slopes and riverside vegetation connected to the Cabriel; its areas characterised by Aleppo pines include the Montes de Los Escañales.

The Río Guadazaón is a permanently flowing Mediterranean mountain river with dense vegetation and a high degree of naturalness. The Molino del Obispo is located along it, a small oasis of vegetation and wetlands where the river forms a small waterfall. The Fuente de San Juan gets its name because it receives sunlight only on 24 June, the longest day of the year.

Culture

The houses of Yémeda preserve the architectural style typical of the Serranía, with sloping roofs and structural solutions suited to the mountain climate. The Balneario de Yémeda was used for medical purposes between 1879 and 1978. Today, the Balneario is abandoned; it retains its tower and former inn. The Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles church in Yémeda has a Greek-cross floor plan.

Local festivities are concentrated in the summer months; during this period, the municipality’s social and cultural activity increases. Yémeda’s traditional festival calendar includes the celebration of San Marcos in April. The patronal festival of the Virgen de los Ángeles in Yémeda takes place in August.

Routes

The rural paths and continuous woodland of Yémeda are ideal for spending time and going for walks. The Camino de la Lana crosses the Río Guadazaón at the old Balneario de Yémeda and then follows a path parallel to the river. Along this section, the Río Guadazaón must be crossed several times; when water levels are high, it must be waded.

The Camino Natural del Guadazaón is a 90-kilometre route that begins in Beamud and ends beyond Cardenete. The Camino Natural del Guadazaón passes the old Balneario de Yémeda, one of the last waypoints before Cardenete. In the Yémeda area, vegetation and private properties prevent the Camino Natural del Guadazaón from continuing along the river; therefore, it connects with the Camino Natural del Cabriel.
