Valdecañas – Culture, Trails and Landscape

Valdecañas lies on a small plain below Peña del Águila, in an area with a very long history of settlement and significant Romanization. Small plots of land and sparse vegetation characterize the landscape. As a result, different traces come together within a limited area: a rocky outcrop with a history of settlement, a religious building, historic graves and paths along the Guadamejud.

Culture

During the Romanization of the region, a small settlement emerged on the rocky outcrop of Peña del Águila. Several necropolises with anthropomorphic graves are located at Peña del Horno. Valdecañas is also home to a humilladero wayside shrine dedicated to Saint Isidore. The named sites represent different forms of heritage: the settlement, burial site and religious memorial can each be viewed from their own perspective.

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a small place of worship. A small sacristy is attached to the right side of the chancel. Inside, the church has a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The portal consists of a semicircular arch with stone voussoirs resting on an impost cornice. Those interested in architectural forms will find several clearly identifiable details here in a single building. Valdecañas's patron-saint festivities are dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua.

Trails and Landscape

The PR-CU 09 Sendero del Valle del Guadamejud hiking trail passes through Valdecañas and follows the Guadamejud River upstream to Valdecañas. Las Tierras de Mimbre, by contrast, is a linear, 60-kilometre route from Valdecañas to Priego. The two route descriptions therefore differ not only in name, but also in course, direction and scale. The PR-CU 09 follows the river, while Las Tierras de Mimbre connects Valdecañas and Priego over a longer linear route. The route passes through a region where the cultivation of basket willow, as well as its cutting and drying in winter, shape the landscape and regional identity. The river trail and the basket-willow route thus create a landscape shaped by waterways and regional craft tradition.

Townscape and Festival Tradition

The plain below Peña del Águila, the barren-looking plots of land and the sparse vegetation form the landscape setting for the sites of cultural and historical interest. The church, humilladero wayside shrine, necropolises and traces of settlement each provide a different accent. This picture is complemented by the patron-saint festivities in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, which represent another named tradition of Valdecañas.
