Las Zomas – Lagoon Landscape, Hiking Trail and Holiday Apartment
Laguna de las Zomas, in the municipality of Fuentes (Cuenca), covers 9.05 ha.
Nature
Laguna de las Zomas lies in the northern part of the Complejo Lagunar del río Moscas. In 2010, the Complejo Lagunar del río Moscas was designated a micro-reserve because of the distinctive nature of its geological processes and its ecological values.
The complex contains eleven sinkholes, nine of which hold water permanently. The sinkholes are interconnected underground and form a lagoon system. The lagoons lie in karst sinkholes created when the ground collapsed as groundwater dissolved gypsum and marl.
The landscape of the Complejo Lagunar del río Moscas changes throughout the year, particularly after rainfall, when the water level rises. The Complejo Lagunar del río Moscas can be visited freely at any time of year.
You can consider the lagoon's area, its geological formation and the changing water level as three different perspectives alongside one another. The possibility of visiting year-round adds an open-ended temporal framework to this perspective. For your own planning, the natural features, water and seasonal changes remain clearly distinguishable.
Trails and Wildlife Observation
The signposted interpretive trail of the Complejo Lagunar del río Moscas is designed as an out-and-back route, is approximately 6.4 km long and follows easy, well-marked paths. It leads to one sinkhole and two of the most representative lagoons. Grey herons and western marsh harriers can often be observed in the complex. For planning your day, the information can be weighted differently: the approximate distance describes the scope of the out-and-back route, the designated destinations indicate the thematic progression, and the condition of the paths is separate information. Those incorporating wildlife observation can consider the bird species mentioned as an additional, clearly distinct aspect alongside the trail and landscape.
The trail information can also be read as several independent details: length, route type, destinations and birdwatching. You decide which of these aspects should be the focus of your day's planning.
