Casas de Benítez: River Landscape, Trails and Culture

Casas de Benítez is located in the La Manchuela comarca, on the Río Júcar and the Tajo-Segura water transfer system. The municipality is home to pine trees, holm oaks, vines, olive trees and broom. Various hiking trails pass through rural paths, pine forests and quiet stretches of the Río Júcar.

The “Tierras de Catalina de Cardona” route begins in El Carmen, within the municipality of Casas de Benítez, and leads, among other places, to a viewpoint overlooking the Río Júcar’s Vega. History and Architectural Heritage

The Cueva de Catalina de Cardona is a rock church in the El Carmen district of the municipality of Casas de Benítez. It preserves the remains of a 16th-century monastery of the Discalced Carmelite nuns. Next to the cave are the remains of the Nuestra Señora del Socorro monastery: Catalina de Cardona founded it in 1572, and Saint Teresa of Jesus visited the site in February 1580. The Cueva de Catalina de Cardona is difficult to access.

The Palacio de los Gosálvez is protected in Casas de Benítez as a monument and Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC); the protection dates from March 30, 1994. Around 1900, the palace was built on the orders of D. Enrique Gosálvez. It was part of a significant industrial complex that used the hydropower of the Río Júcar.

The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de San Ginés de Arlés is a well-preserved church from the late 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; it also features vaults and a dome.

River and Local Insights

Along the riverbank of the “Los Nuevos” Centro Agroambiental, you can walk among native vegetation and organic gardens. The visitor center of the Centro Agroambiental was set up in an old mill that had previously been converted into a hydroelectric power station that was pioneering for the area.

Catas de Vino La Morenilla offers wine tastings accompanied by experts. The Museo de Maquetas Eutimio can be visited by prior arrangement.
