Culture and History
Huete’s historic ensemble is freely accessible at no charge; the Ayuntamiento offers guided tours of the town’s main sights. The Monasterio de la Merced de Huete has documented origins in the 13th century, while the complex visible today was built mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries. As a Baroque complex, it has two cloisters from different construction phases.
The present-day Torre del Reloj was designed by Fernando López, an architect from Cuenca. The building combines academic elements with a concave-convex late Baroque structure. Of the former Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Huete, only the church remains today. Sections of the town wall have also been preserved in Huete; construction began during the Andalusian period. An underground Gothic street runs beneath the remains of the Iglesia de San Pedro.
Museums and Cultural Experiences
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Florencio de la Fuente displays paintings, sculptures and graphic works by important contemporary Spanish artists. It focuses on artists associated with the avant-garde movements and artistic renewal of the 20th century. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural activities and educational programmes.
The Museo de la Fotografía – Fundación Antonio Pérez combines temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, audiovisual screenings and meetings with artists. In Huete’s historic centre, the Museo Etnográfico de Huete presents a collection on agriculture, livestock farming, craft professions and traditional domestic life.
The Centro de Interpretación de las Fiestas de San Juan Evangelista displays exhibits and explains the origins, development and significance of the cultural heritage associated with these festivals. It is located in the former galleries of a church in Huete. The apse area of Nuestra Señora de Atienza now serves as a venue for concerts and other cultural activities.
Archaeology and Mining History
The Castillo de Luna is an ancient alcazaba built on a Roman fortification. The Cuevas de Sanabrio in Saceda del Río (Huete) are a representative, visitable complex of Roman mines for lapis specularis. Guided tours are offered for the Cuevas de Sanabrio de Saceda del Río (Huete); in the Cuevas del Sanabrio, visitors can enter ancient Roman mine tunnels and learn how the crystal was extracted.
Landscape and Walking Routes
The Paseo por la Vega del Borbotón runs alongside family gardens in the Borbotón valley. These gardens traditionally supplied Huete with fruit and vegetables. Different focuses – from museums and festival culture to mining history and the valley landscape – can thus be compared when planning, without limiting the trip to a single theme. A monumental tour of Huete includes the Monasterio de La Merced, the apse area of Santa María de Atienza, the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, the Convento de Jesús y María and the Cripta de Atienza.
