Discover Caracenilla – Culture, Landscapes and Trails

Caracenilla holds patron saint festivities in honor of Santo Cristo de la Luz. Paragliding and adventure activities are part of the regional tourism offering in Caracenilla; the town also has a paragliding school.

Culture and History

The Ermita de La Concepción was inaugurated in 1802. Its foundation stone was laid on May 4, 1800; the inauguration celebrations took place on October 2 and 3, 1802. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, the crossing is vaulted, and Ionic pilasters are arranged in pairs.

The parish church of San José y Santo Domingo de Silos is an 18th-century Neoclassical building with three naves and a Latin-cross floor plan. A collection of eighteen paintings is located between the transept and the presbytery. The church also contains a 15th-century baptismal font from an earlier church.

The Puente Romano de Caracenilla is Roman in origin and has a single semicircular arch made of dressed ashlar stone. Careful restoration has rebuilt nearly its entire structure. In the abandoned settlement of Uterviejo, the visible ruins of a 12th-century Romanesque basilica have been preserved.

Traditional building methods are also part of the townscape: adobe bricks made from straw and clay were traditionally used for partition walls in Caracenilla. Near Caracenilla, the steep Cuevecillas de los Moros are carved into sandstone on Cerro Cabeza Marina; their caves are connected by a series of passageways.

Landscape and Geology

Cerro del Otero near Caracenilla is an erosion-formed mesa in the Loranca Basin. Sedimentary layers from the Miocene are visible on Cerro del Otero. From Caracenilla, Cerro del Otero can be seen on the right bank of the Río Mayor; it is an isolated, typical mesa on the plain.

The Ermita de La Concepción offers views across the entire Río Mayor valley. Caracenilla is considered one of the places from which the Altos de Cabrejas, which run parallel to the Río Mayor valley, are most easily accessible via the CM-2019.

Trails and Activities

The GR-69 Circular de Huete route passes through Caracenilla. Along the way, it partly follows livestock tracks and traditional paths while avoiding country roads wherever possible. There are several routes for mountain biking and hiking around Caracenilla.
