Culture and History

The Monasterio de San José was built from 1576 onwards according to the guidelines of Saint Teresa of Jesus. As early as 11 April 1568, Saint Teresa of Jesus founded her third convent in Malagón, the Monasterio de San José. The Museo Teresiano can be visited together with the monastery church as part of a guided tour covering the history and legacy of Saint Teresa.

The Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena was built in the 15th and 16th centuries beside the Camino Real de la Plata. The Molino Carrillo also reaches far back into the town’s history: its origins date back to the 18th century, while its sturdy stone walls, wooden roofs and hydraulic mill wheel have been preserved.

The Centro Cultural Santa Teresa is located in a stately 19th-century mansion and currently hosts cultural activities, exhibitions and municipal events. The Museo Gloria Merino is housed in this building. It contains works donated by Gloria Merino to the municipality of Malagón, including representative pieces from various stages of her career as well as sketches, illustrations, studies, photographs, awards and press articles. The museum opened in Malagón on 15 December as a space dedicated to Gloria Merino’s artistic heritage.

Nature and Trails

General access to the Reserva Natural Navas de Malagón is free. As a protected area, visitors should stay on the paths and at the edges and avoid entering sensitive areas. The Sierra de Malagón has hiking trails, while the Nava Grande is suitable for birdwatching; among other species, little grebes and black-necked grebes can be observed there.

Several signposted routes focus on different aspects of length and route format. Route PR-CR 23 is 13.5 kilometres long and runs in one direction. The Sierra de Malagón–Molino Carrillo route is 9.5 kilometres long, follows an out-and-back course and has a medium difficulty level. The Valdehierro–Peña Negra route is an 18-kilometre circular trail. The Las Navas de Malagón route is 16.4 kilometres long and also follows an out-and-back course.

Festivals and Local Traditions

Malagón’s carnival celebrations have been recognised as Fiestas de Interés Turístico Regional, meaning festivals of regional tourist interest. Carnival includes a regional migas competition with a tasting of the traditional dish, accompanied by sweets and rosquillas.

The Romerías de las Aldeas take place every Sunday in May. From 11 to 15 October, processions and offerings are held in Malagón in honour of the founder of the Convento de San José. The programme also includes a Teresian market and an international mystical poetry competition.
