Culture

San Martín de Elines is visited especially for its Romanesque collegiate church. The Colegiata de San Martín de Elines is designated as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” and stands on the remains of a Mozarabic church from the 10th century. Its Romanesque architecture, Mozarabic history and designation represent three distinguishable aspects of the same place.

At the entrance to San Martín de Elines, next to the bridge on the banks of the Ebro, there is a simple hermitage. Its location beside the bridge and riverbank creates a different spatial focus from that of the church.

On the Way

The Ruta Páramo de la Lora is a 10.64-kilometre circular route that begins in the Barrio de Arriba of San Martín de Elines, in a square next to the Romanesque collegiate church, and ends in San Martín de Elines. The route can be cycled; however, caution is required on the rocky limestone pavement sections and because of the ascent.

Stage 2.1 of the Camino Natural del Ebro runs between Aldea de Ebro and San Martín de Elines. Stage 4 of this trail descends to the Barrio de Abajo and then approaches the Ebro Canyon; along the way, it offers views of San Martín de Elines and its collegiate church.

A circular route, a connection between two places, and a descent followed by an approach to the canyon represent different forms of route planning. When comparing routes, you can use the distance, the places they connect, or the viewpoints described as a guide.

Landscape

The first section of the Ebro Canyon is visible from San Martín de Elines. Along the Ruta Páramo de la Lora lies a landscape where fields and pastures alternate with stands of holm oaks and Pyrenean oaks. A nearly 150-metre-high vertical cliff is used by vultures for breeding.
