Brez: San Cipriano, Cliffs and Hay Meadows

Brez is regarded as one of Cantabria’s particularly charming villages and lies on a steeply sloping hillside. Above some of the houses in Brez there is a large rock that has been secured so that it does not come loose. These two features alone reveal the special relationship between the village structure and the landscape: The village cannot be separated from its hillside location, and the large rock is visibly part of its surroundings.

Culture

The church of San Cipriano stands above Brez. It can be reached via a paved road that may be difficult to walk along in rain or snow. The relatively small church has a single-nave layout and a square-ended chancel. Checkerboard motifs appear on all the voussoirs of its arched doorway. The location, condition of the route, floor plan and ornamental detail are four distinct aspects that can be perceived individually when viewing the building.

Routes and History

Brez can be reached via a local road that branches off the CA-185 road between Potes and Espinama. From Brez, a mountain-farming or livestock-driving track initially leads to the Torre de La Cerrá; beyond that, the route continues off-trail. The path from Brez to the Canal de las Arredondas served as an approach to the area where mines of the same name were located.

Various forms of access therefore coexist in Brez: The access road links the village with the road between Potes and Espinama, while the routes to the Torre de La Cerrá and the Canal de las Arredondas each have their own character. The mountain-farming or livestock-driving track does not end at a continuously developed path, but instead continues into an off-trail section. The historical reference to the mines of the same name remains associated with the approach to the Canal de las Arredondas.

The circular Canal de las Arredondas route begins and ends in Brez and approaches the sheer cliffs of the Macizo Oriental. In the route’s well-preserved surroundings, Quebracho-oak and cork-oak forests alternate with hay meadows. The circular route, cliffs, forest and hay meadows can be considered in terms of both the form of the path and the impression made by the landscape.
