Olea: Romanesque Traces and Traditional Water Heritage

History

The Ermita de San Miguel in Olea was declared a national historic-artistic monument by Royal Decree 1750/1979 of 4 April 1979. The rest of the temple dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Romanesque remains preserved in Olea include two portals. Among a series of corbels in Olea is a figuratively decorated corbel. Remains of an early medieval necropolis with slab graves were found in the surroundings of the Ermita de San Miguel.

Water and Village Character

In the village centre and nearby surroundings, Olea preserves 17 livestock watering troughs, 8 water basins, 6 fountains, a washhouse and numerous churratas. Next to the Pila de Ciano, an information panel provides details about Olea’s traditional water heritage. Trails through the Landscape

Olea can be reached via the Cantabria-Meseta motorway; the road leads there from Mataporquera, 8 kilometres away, or from Reinosa, 10 kilometres away. These two distance indications provide two specific starting points for your journey. The Ascensión al Endino route begins and ends in Olea; its starting point is in the square of the Romanesque Ermita de San Miguel. From Olea, it follows a descending track through oak groves. The route also passes through oak and beech forest; along a four-kilometre section, viewpoints offer views of Reinosa and the entire Campoo De Suso valley. It is approximately 11 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes without the summit, or about 4 hours and 15 minutes with the summit. For planning the day, the approximate length and the two time options are not the only factors that matter; the route, forest sections and viewpoints are also relevant.

Culture and Event

The Bienal de Rabel takes place in Olea every two years in the autumn of odd-numbered years and attracts traditional music enthusiasts from throughout the Iberian Peninsula. The Bienal de Rabel features opening and closing concerts. As part of the Bienal de Rabel, there are lectures and a fair of instrument makers, where visitors can watch craftspeople at work and try out instruments.
