Muriedas: Palace, Church Architecture and Camino del Norte
The Palacio del Marqués de Villapuente in Muriedas is one of the most significant examples of civil Baroque architecture in Cantabria. The Marqués de Villapuente’s manor palace in Muriedas combines a monumental tower and an aristocratic residence in a stone building. The three-storey fortress tower built of ashlar masonry is part of this structure.
Culture
Another distinctive building is San Vicente Church in Muriedas. It has a single-nave layout with two bays covered by rib vaults. The main chapel has a straight termination and a star vault. The church’s floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. A portico was added to its southern side in 1847.
At the Palacio, the monumental tower, the aristocratic residence and the three-storey fortress tower are the main features. San Vicente presents different architectural accents: the single-nave layout, rib vaults, star vault, Latin-cross floor plan and the portico added in 1847 form an independent sequence of architectural details.
Routes
The Camino del Norte includes the 23.520 km stage “De Variante a Muriedas”. The Muriedas variant passes through Maliaño to Muriedas and then continues along Avenida de Bilbao.
When considering this route, length and course are two separate details. The 23.520 kilometres describe the stage as a measurement, while Maliaño, Muriedas and Avenida de Bilbao mark its sequence. This makes it possible to classify the route based on its specific place names and its stated length.
