Arredondo in Cantabria: Nature, Routes and Culture

Nature

The protected section of the Río Bustablao in Arredondo extends from its confluence with the Río Asón to the bridge on the road from Bustablao. When comparing the two natural features, a protected area relating to parts of the municipality differs from a river section with clearly named starting and ending points. This keeps the geographical classification closely tied to the river courses and the stated boundaries.

Hiking

The route to the Nacimiento del Asón, the Cascada, is a circular route starting from Arredondo. Another route through the Valle de Asón runs from Arredondo via Socueva, Buzulucueva, Los Machucos and Bustablado back to Arredondo. One route leads from Arredondo via the Senda Fluvial del Asón, the Río Asón and the Cascada del Ansón back to Arredondo. The PR-S 09 “Sendero de Peña Lavalle” is a hiking route starting from Arredondo.

The route descriptions emphasize different aspects: a circular route, a sequence of several place names, a connection between a riverside path and a waterfall, and a named PR trail stand side by side. For your planning, you can therefore distinguish the routes by their courses and the landscape or place references mentioned in each case. To classify the routes, not only their names but also their described forms are relevant: the circular route to the Nacimiento del Asón stands alongside the sequence of places in the Valle de Asón. The routes featuring the Senda Fluvial, Río Asón and Cascada del Ansón, together with the PR-S 09, expand this selection with a river connection and an explicitly named hiking trail.

Culture and Tradition

On 1 November, Arredondo hosts the Feria de Año de Todos los Santos. It is a large livestock breeders’ gathering with a goat livestock fair. Construction of a religious building in Arredondo began in 1852 under the direction of the architect Manuel Gutiérrez Vélez. In 1988, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is one of the few examples of neoclassical architecture in Cantabria.

The natural and cultural themes can be considered separately here through a fixed date, an event and a building with its own construction and protection history. Local tradition and architecture thus stand alongside the river areas and route courses, without the individual themes losing their own significance.

Getting There

Arredondo is connected by bus routes to Santander, the capital of Cantabria, and to Ramales de la Victoria. These two destinations provide different points of connection for regional planning. The connection therefore refers both to the Cantabrian capital and to another regional destination.
