Landscape

Teno Alto is a traditional village within Parque Rural de Teno. Parque Rural de Teno is a volcanic mountain massif crossed by deep ravines, coastal cliffs and laurel forests.

The traditional houses, small square and chapel of Teno Alto are scattered across an expansive landscape of terraced fields and pastureland. The green pastures contrast with the diverse landscapes of the surrounding area.

Teno Alto can be reached on foot via the Camino del Risco from the town centre of Buenavista del Norte.

The officially designated PR-TF 57 Callejón de Teno is a linear hiking trail of medium difficulty and 4.1 kilometres in length. It connects El Palmar with Los Bailaderos; no permit is required for the PR-TF 57 Callejón de Teno.

The officially designated PR-TF 58 Camino del Risco is a linear hiking trail of medium difficulty; alternatively, it can be walked as a circular route when combined with other trails. Individual hikers do not need a permit for the PR-TF 58 Camino del Risco, and the trail ends uphill at the Plaza in Teno Alto.

“Hiking: Secrets of Teno” is a cultural hike through Teno Alto that begins in Los Bailaderos and explores traditional practices and the rural heritage of the Teno massif.

The varied terrain and impressive landscapes of Parque Rural de Teno make it possible to enjoy road cycling and mountain biking.

Culture

The Teno Alto route leads to the Casa-Cueva de “Los Melros”, natural caves or caves carved into the rock. The inhabitants of Teno formerly used them for shelter from bad weather and for resting.

The route also includes La Era con Aventadero, where grain was traditionally threshed and the grains separated from the chaff, as well as El Horno de Teja, one of the best-preserved tile kilns in the Teno massif.

In Teno Alto, the traditional production of roof tiles is being revived using artisanal methods.

Local Life

In Teno Alto, the Baile de Piñata is kept alive during Carnival. Couples dance in a circle while the women pull on the ribbons until the piñata opens.

Goat farming and the artisanal production of cheese continue to be among the most important economic activities in Teno Alto. Quesería Naturteno is located in Matoso, El Drago, Teno Alto, and offers the production and sale of typical regional cheese.
