Llanadas in Tenerife – Hiking Trails, Potatoes and Cheese

Las Llanadas is an agricultural hamlet in the mid-altitude areas of Los Realejos; traditional cultivation there includes old potato varieties. The upper area lies within an area of special agricultural and landscape interest in the higher part of the municipality.

Nature and Trails

One of the prominent starting points is the Chanajiga recreational area, located in Las Llanadas and ranking among the most important recreational areas on the island of Tenerife in terms of capacity and range of services. Numerous hiking trails start from there: walkers can descend to the coast or climb to the island’s highest mountains. Other paths lead to areas of laurel forest and to areas featuring the various vegetation types of the Canary Islands.

Hiking Routes

The PR-TF 40 can be started from Chanajiga via Las Llanadas; the complete route is listed as 15 km long, with 900 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of eight hours. On the PR-TF 40, the left-hand turn of the Camino de la Traviesa leads to Las Llanadas and onwards to El Madroño and Palo Blanco.

On Route 040, hikers can continue on foot from Chanajiga to Las Llanadas and access public bus route 330 there. A section of the PR-TF 40 runs through protected natural areas in the BICA network and is authorised for, or shared with, bicycles, horses and motorised vehicles. The official route map for the PR-TF 41.1 shows Las Llanadas between Llanos de Chanajiga and El Lance.

Agriculture and Regional Products

Farmers in Las Llanadas help preserve a wide variety of traditional Papa Bonita varieties, including coloradas, blancas, llagadas, ojo de perdiz, negras, as well as azucenas blancas and azucenas negras. The Papa Bonita grown in Las Llanadas is one of the varieties cultivated in Los Realejos under the protected designation of origin Papa Antigua de Canarias, which has comprised a total of 29 varieties since 2010.

Quesería Las Llanadas offers almogrote, naturally matured cheese and paprika-matured cheese, naturally matured and gofio-enhanced semi-matured cheese, smoked cheese and requesón; its artisanal production also includes fresh goat’s cheese, smoked cheese, requesón and raw milk. On Saturdays, products from Quesería Las Llanadas are available at the Los Realejos farmers’ market. There, visitors can talk to the owner, Montse, about cheese-making and learn about the process first-hand.

The Muestra Gastronómica de la Papa Bonita is held annually in Los Realejos in July. It is linked to the potato cultivation maintained by farmers in Las Llanadas and other local areas.

History and Festivals

Until the mid-to-late 20th century, groups of traditional pajares could be found in Las Llanadas. Fregel’s Cross has a small chapel and, since the end of the 19th century, has been the venue for lively festivities organised by residents of Icod el Alto, Las Llanadas, Palo Blanco and Tigaiga.

In the heights of Las Llanadas, celebrations in honour of Saint Anthony take place during the first week of September; the festival calendar also lists Cruz del Castaño and San Antonio Abad in Las Llanadas on the first weekend.

Public Transport Connection

On 22 January 2025, TITSA route 330 operated as a circular connection between Los Realejos, San Vicente and Las Llanadas.
