Cruz Santa: Cross Tradition, Wine and Nature

The tradition of the Invención de la Cruz is reflected in La Cruz Santa in the particularly outstanding design of its crosses.

Culture

The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz was consecrated in 1766 as a single-nave temple with a prominent presbytery and a sacristy on the southern side. It houses an old wooden cross which, according to tradition, was discovered by a rider in the Barranco de la Raya. The church also preserves the devotional image Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes.

The sculpture “Homenaje a la Cruz” commemorates the wooden cross that, according to tradition, was discovered in 1666 by a rider in the Pago de Higa, the former name of La Cruz Santa. On Plaza de La Punta in La Cruz Santa, “Homenaje a la Cruz” is a monumental stone cross. The Cruz del Lomo chapel in La Cruz Santa is notable for its size and architecture. The work “Homenaje a la tradición sociocultural” occupies the entire façade of the Centro Cultural de la Cruz Santa. The bust “Busto de José Mesa Cabrera” honours the musician and composer José Mesa Cabrera, who devoted himself selflessly and tirelessly to musical culture in the north of Tenerife.

Nature

Between the settlements of La Zamora and La Cruz Santa lies the Balsa de La Cruz Santa, one of Tenerife’s largest irrigation reservoirs. It is used for observing migratory birds; more than thirty migratory bird species have been recorded there. The Balsa can be reached via several roads that converge at the roundabout by Parque del Lagar in La Cruz Santa; there is a small car park there.

Wine

La Cruz Santa is considered the true centre of the local wine sector. Cordón Múltiple Trenzado is a vine-training technique that has been used in the region for centuries and gives the local wines a distinctive character. The sculpture “Homenaje a la Tradición Vitivinícola” stands at the intersection of Calle Real de La Cruz Santa and Calle Puldón.

Routes

The “Paisajes Trenzados” route begins at Plaza de la Cruz Santa. It passes vineyards using the Cordón Trenzado vine-training system and includes the Montaña de Los Frailes natural monument.

For your travel planning, culture, nature observation, winegrowing and the route can be considered as different focal points. Depending on your preferred daily rhythm, you can organise these topics separately or combine them.
