Discover Las Vegas: Hiking Trails and Canarian Heritage

Las Vegas is considered the oldest settlement nucleus in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona and preserves the character of a traditional Canarian hamlet with ethnographic and historical heritage. After the conquest of Tenerife, Las Vegas was the site of the first colonial settlement in the Abona region.

Hiking

The PR-TF 83.4 Camino Real Granadilla-Las Vegas connects the town centre of Granadilla with Las Vegas and features original paved sections as well as religious landmarks such as crosses and Calvaries.

The PR-TF 83.1 begins on Calle Guajara, climbs continuously in a north-westerly direction, then joins the PR-TF 83 towards Paisaje Lunar and connects Las Vegas with Los Escurriales, an area popularly known as Paisaje Lunar.

The PR-TF 83.1 route passes through cultivated land and pine forest before running parallel to a lava flow to the foot of Risco del Muerto.

The PR-TF 83.5 Las Vegas–Los Hibrones–La Abejera begins next to the Nuestra Señora de La Esperanza hermitage in Las Vegas.

The short PR-TF 83.2 Circular de Las Vegas trail allows you to explore the hamlet. The PR-TF 83.3 trail initially follows the Camino Real del Sur before returning to Las Vegas.

Culture and History

The historic, emblematic hamlet of Las Vegas grew up around the Nuestra Señora de La Esperanza hermitage, built during the colonial period; the hermitage preserves several architecturally interesting features.

The Danza de Varas de Las Vegas is a ritual dance; 26 July is designated as its annual date in Las Vegas, on the southern side of Tenerife.

Seven dancers are connected to one another by palm sticks covered in coloured paper.

In its traditional form, the Danza was accompanied by string instruments and, on one day each year, proceeded through the hamlet together with residents and former residents.

Along the PR-TF 83.3, the former use of the forest by local residents is regarded as a subsistence activity that continued until the 1980s.

The vegas that give Las Vegas its name are fertile, level soils where rainwater regularly collects, making them well suited to cultivation.

The channels, or tajeas, carried water by gravity from the main channel to lower-lying plots and increased crop productivity.
