Nature

The Caldera de Gairía is a geologically young volcanic cone with species-rich vegetation typical of dry areas, including Tabaiba dulce (Euphorbia balsamifera). From its 461 m-high summit, younger volcanic formations such as Malpaís Grande, the Caldera de la Laguna, the Caldera de los Arrabales and the Caldera de Liria are visible.

The local SL FV 31 hiking trail from Tiscamanita to Vega del Río Palmas begins in Tiscamanita, climbs to the ridge of Morro Jorjado, continues via Agua de Bueyes to Vega del Río Palmas and ends at the cone of a volcano. The trail also begins near the road between Tuineje and Antigua and passes agricultural land after leaving Tiscamanita.

After the first ascent, the SL FV 31 includes a rest area in a stone shelter with wooden tables and benches. The different routes and landscape areas can be viewed side by side for planning your own day.

The SL FV 7 hiking trail crosses the protected Malpaís Grande area and passes by or through the area of the Calderas de Gairía. The plain of Tiscamanita is considered one of the most important areas for the guirre, the largest bird of prey in the Canary Islands.

Culture

The Ermita de San Marcos in Tiscamanita is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and dates from the late 17th century. It contains two altarpieces and sculptures of the Inmaculada, the Virgen del Carmen and San Marcos.

The traditional manor houses of Tiscamanita mostly date from the 19th century and are largely associated with the prosperity acquired through the export of cochineal. The Casa del Maestro, an emblematic building in the village, also dates from the late 19th century.

The Centro de Interpretación de Los Molinos is located in a traditional Majorero house; next to the museum stands a restored windmill. The exhibition there presents the culture surrounding Gofio as well as the process of producing authentic Canarian Gofio.

The annual Romería de San Marcos leads residents and visitors through the village in traditional clothing. It includes singing, parranda groups, offerings, decorated floats and traditional music. The San Marcos festivities take place every August and also include pilgrimages, Taifa dances, concerts, religious celebrations, and a water and foam festival.

Trails

The local SL FV 6 hiking trail between Tuineje and Tiscamanita is 5.6 km long, has a low difficulty level and has a stated duration of 2.25 hours. It has geological, geomorphological, historical and heritage-conservation, and ethnographic value, particularly because of its water-management and agricultural features.

The Ruta 30 cycling route connects Antigua, Valles de Ortega, Casillas de Morales, Agua de Bueyes and Tiscamanita via dirt tracks and paved roads. Ruta 37 begins in Tiscamanita and connects the village with Tuineje via the area known as Cortijo de Teguerey.
