La Ampuyenta – Cultural Heritage and Cultural Landscape

The Ermita de San Pedro de Alcántara is protected as a Monument of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and was founded on 14 August 1681. The Casa de Fray Andresito is protected as a Historic Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC).

Culture

The pulpit of the Ermita de San Pedro de Alcántara is a polychrome and gilded wooden structure made in the 18th century, featuring twelve panels of the Apostles and inscriptions from the Creed. The hermitage also has a tall exterior wall topped with battlements, the barbican.

As a building, the Ermita de San Pedro de Alcántara is a single-nave chapel with a gabled roof and a presbytery set apart in height and width. Following restoration, the Casa de Fray Andresito retains two rooms with features of the island’s traditional architecture.

The Hospitalito de La Ampuyenta consists of three interconnected pavilions and was considered an architectural innovation. It lies within the protected surroundings of the historic monument of the Ermita de San Pedro de Alcántara church.

Tour

The Complejo Cultural Patrimonial de La Ampuyenta offers a short walking tour through the village, the rural surroundings and the historic buildings. The route therefore brings together different perspectives on the area without reducing the individual stops to a single theme.

Since 2015, part of the Hospitalito de La Ampuyenta has housed the Centro de Interpretación de las Ermitas de Fuerteventura. It is an exhibition venue dedicated to the island’s religious heritage, with temporary exhibitions and educational content for the general public.

The Casa de Fray Andresito now serves as a small, simple place of pilgrimage with informative panels and images about his life and legacy. A short tour, exhibition content and individual buildings thus provide different focal points for personal day planning.

Landscape

Festivals and Flavours

The “Doctor Mena” literature and short-story competition was held for its third edition on 16 January at the Complejo Patrimonial y Cultural de La Ampuyenta. The festival in honour of San Pedro Alcántara takes place on 19 October in Ampuyenta.

The “Andrés Valerón” cheese and wine tasting is a highlighted event held as part of the January celebrations in honour of Fray Andresito.
