Culture and History

There are towers on Jaizkibel that were built during the last Carlist War, from 1872 to 1876. Five of these towers have been preserved. Three of the preserved towers on Jaizkibel are located in Lezo. These three towers are catalogued as a monumental complex (Conjunto Monumental). On the slopes of Jaizkibel near the town centre of Lezo, the only one of the 13 forced-labour camps in the Oarsoaldea and Bajo Bidasoa area that is still preserved has been maintained.

In this way, several historical layers meet on Jaizkibel: the towers from the last Carlist War, the preserved forced-labour camp and the areas reached by the memorial trail.

Historic Memorial Trail

The historic memorial trail begins at Plaza de Santo Cristo. You can allow approximately one hour for the round trip; the difficulty level is medium-low. Those wishing to set off for the Barracones de Jaizkibel can follow the historic memorial trail. It leads to the Sorotxo and Iparragirre areas.

The starting point, approximate duration and difficulty level are specified for this trail, as is its historical destination. The route therefore connects Plaza de Santo Cristo with the Sorotxo and Iparragirre areas and makes the Barracones de Jaizkibel visible as the trail's destination.
