Errezil – Hernio-Gazume, Apple Route and Pilgrimages

Nature and Landscape

Most of the Hernio massif belongs to the municipality of Errezil. The Gazume summit is 1,013 m high and lies largely within the territory of Errezil.

The ZEC Hernio-Gazume is a 2,158-hectare limestone massif with karst relief and high ecological and scenic value. Endangered animal species live in the ZEC Hernio-Gazume area, including wood-decomposing insects, bats and birds of prey such as griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures.

Thus, Errezil’s landscape combines geological formations, a distinctive summit and a designated area of particular ecological importance. The animal groups mentioned range from insects and bats to large birds of prey. Hernio-Gazume therefore brings together different natural features within a clearly defined area.

Hiking Trails and Apple Culture

The Ibarbi Apple Route, SL-Gi 48, is a 3.5 km-long local hiking trail that passes through Errezil. Information boards along the route explain apple growing and apple culture.

The Apple Route begins in the central square, where ox-pulling trials take place. The PR-Gi 143 hiking trail connects Errezil and Zestoa in both directions and is 13.7 km long.

The Ibarbi Route connects several local points of reference: its starting point is in the central square, its information boards address apple growing, and the route passes through Errezil. PR-Gi 143 extends the stated route beyond the town to Zestoa and is described in both directions.

The trails therefore feature both the agriculturally shaped apple culture and the village’s public space, as well as the connection to another town. The ox-pulling trials form part of the stated character of the central square, where the Apple Route begins.

Culture and Events

The San Antonio hermitage is connected by stone crosses to the Way of the Cross in the village of Errezil. The connection thus consists of a specific sequence of the hermitage, crosses and the village Way of the Cross.

Errezil’s patronal festival in honour of Saint Martin takes place on 11 November. The pilgrimages to Hernio take place on 29 August, the following Sunday and the three Sundays after that.

The dates of the patronal festival and the pilgrimages to Hernio give Errezil’s cultural calendar fixed dates: 11 November, as well as 29 August followed by the following Sunday and three additional Sundays.

The local tradition therefore includes both the spatial connection between San Antonio and the Way of the Cross and recurring religious dates. Saint Martin is the focus of the patronal festival, while the pilgrimages to Hernio are tied to a fixed August date and the Sundays that follow.
