Zaldibia is one of the main gateways to Aralar Nature Park. The municipality connects this landscape with numerous routes that you can explore on foot or by bicycle. Thus, in Zaldibia, trails through the surrounding area exist alongside specific destinations along individual routes.

Nature and Trails

One trail begins next to the CAF depot, two kilometres from the centre of Zaldibia. The route follows a paved path that is several hundred, if not several thousand, years old, leading to several meadows and peaks in Aralar. The Osinberde Trail in Zaldibia leads to the source of the Amundarain stream. The two route descriptions therefore identify their own landmarks: the described route begins at the CAF depot, while the Osinberde Trail ends at the source of the Amundarain.

On the way to Arkaka, two kilometres from the centre of Zaldibia, you will find a recreational area. It is located beside an artificial lake and is equipped with tables and benches. The site also includes a fishing school for children. The place on the way to Arkaka therefore combines a lake, seating areas and an explicitly mentioned fishing-related facility.

Culture and History

The Hermitage of San Saturnino is considered one of the earliest temples in Gipuzkoa. Ausoko Gaztelu served an observation function in the 12th and 13th centuries. The two places represent different historical associations, connected in Zaldibia with a religious building and a former observation role.

Zaldibia has several Neolithic megalithic monuments that are directly connected with the sheep trails leading to the pastures of Aralar. These monuments include Ausokoi I, Ausokoi II, Argarbi, Matxitxane and Jentilarri. The names refer not merely to a single site, but to a whole series of monuments within the municipality and their connection with the pasture trails of Aralar.

The millstones of the Kanpain mill stood idle for several years and are once again able to grind flour. Zubiaurre House served as accommodation for hikers and for many years was a well-known school for sewing and reading. These details preserve both the former use of the house and the renewed functionality of the millstones.

Local Flavours

Zaldibia is known for its famous Mondejus. This is a type of white blood sausage made from mutton. Its light colour and the type of meat used are among the characteristic features of this local speciality.

Getting There

Zaldibia is easily accessible by road. The town is also easily accessible by train. For travelling to Zaldibia, Ordizia railway station is the nearest station.
