Gaztelu – Church, Forest Path and Farmhouses

Nature

Green mountains and meadows surround Gaztelu and offer opportunities for walks. Anyone wishing to explore the surroundings on foot will find both types of landscape around the village as a natural setting for this outdoor stay.

The walking opportunities extend beyond the immediate surroundings of the village into a landscape defined by green mountains and meadows. The area around Gaztelu is also characterised by substantial farmhouses that preserve the character of rural Gipuzkoa.

A winding road through wooded terrain leads to Gaztelu. The approach is therefore characterised by a route through the forest with numerous bends.

Culture

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 16th century and designed in the Baroque style. Its architecture includes a Gothic portico, which adds another clearly identifiable stylistic element to the church building.

The parish church was recently restored by local volunteers. The restoration by people from the village is documented as a recent addition to the church’s long building history.

Another historic building is the old Antiguo lavadero washhouse. It has a wooden roof supported by stone pillars. Despite its age, the washhouse has been preserved in good condition.

The historic traces are spread across different points of the village: the church represents its religious architectural history, the washhouse an intact public function, and the sculpture with the crosses keeps the memory of Santa Cruz present in the village.

History

At the entrance to Gaztelu, a sculpture commemorates the former Santa Cruz chapel. The chapel once stood exactly where the sculpture now commemorates it.

Numerous crosses stand around the former site of the chapel. The site thus preserves the historical connection to Santa Cruz through the sculpture and the crosses at the former chapel location.

Paths

A walking path leads from Gaztelu village square through forests to the Uli picnic area. The path has a clearly named starting point at the village square and an equally clearly designated destination.

Uli is now a picnic area. The house of the Mikeletes once stood here, so the path through the forests ends at a place with its own historical past.

Uli also connects the present and the past at a single destination: today, the site serves as a picnic area; at the same time, the former house of the Mikeletes refers to another use of the same place. In this way, the forest walking path has a clearly defined historical connection in addition to its route.

For Gaztelu, 15 August is the date of the patron saint festivities in August. The festival date therefore clearly falls on the 15th day of the month within August.
