Holiday apartment in Elduain: Church Art, Mountains and Nature

Elduain lies on the road between Tolosa and Leitza. Mountains surround the town. In this setting, church art, historic workplaces, nature observation and a green route each provide a different focus. The day's itinerary can alternate between culture, nature and activity, with each area offering specific connections to the town or landscape.

Churches and Sacred Art

The parish church of Santa Catalina (Santa Katalina) has a Romanesque portal dating from the 13th century. Its two-part tower includes a belfry and a clock. Inside the church is a central altarpiece by Juan Berrueta. The Santa Cruz chapel stands on a small hill. This makes it possible to give architectural history, tower architecture, sacred painting and the hilltop chapel their own focus during days devoted to culture.

Local History Between Mills and Dolmens

The Ugarango Mill, built in 1866, is part of the town's history. Another old mill in Elduain was recovered from overgrown land and rebuilt. The rebuilt mill complements Ugarango Mill as another historic example of the town's working heritage. The old washhouse is located in the lower part of the town centre. Up to six old lime kilns have been restored in the area around Elduain. The Basaburu Dolmen reflects a cultural sequence from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Elduain's patronal festival is dedicated to the Feast of the Nativity of Mary on 8 September. The washhouse's location in the lower part of the town centre differs from the location of the lime kilns in the surrounding area. At the dolmen, the stated period reaches significantly further back than the construction year of Ugarango Mill.

Urdelar and the Leitzaran Biotope

The mountainous landscape around Elduain includes peaks such as Urdelar. The Pyrenean desman is among the species living in the Leitzaran Biotope. Trout fishing is also common in the river there. For nature observation, the Pyrenean desman is the main wildlife focus; those interested in the water can find a separate focus in trout fishing. The mountains and the river thus offer two different ways to explore Elduain's natural features.

Plazaola Green Route for Active Days

The Plazaola Green Route can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. The two most important access points to the Plazaola Green Route in Gipuzkoa are in Andoain's Otieta Park and at the Urto recreational area near Berastegi. For a day on the route, the means of transport is therefore a specific planning consideration: walking and cycling require different daily rhythms. One of the two access points can then be chosen as the day's starting point. Andoain and Berastegi thus represent two different starting situations within Gipuzkoa. Anyone who switches between walking and cycling is not planning the same type of day on the route. Access is also part of the preparation; each of the two entry points provides its own starting point for the route.
