The Royal Seminary was founded in Bergara in 1776. It was a pioneering centre for scientific research and high-quality education.
Culture
Renaissance buildings stand in Bergara’s historic centre. One of these buildings is Casa Agirrebeña.
The Laboratorium Museum is housed in the Errekalde Palace. It contains a permanent natural science exhibition. Its collections cover chemistry, physics and zoology. The exhibition therefore ranges from the natural sciences to the study of animals.
The Church of San Pedro de Ariznoa was built on the foundations of an earlier church. Its construction took place in four building campaigns. These range from the final decades of the 15th century to 1620.
The church contains the Cristo de la Agonía, a work by Juan de Mesa. San Pedro de Ariznoa also has a Plateresque high altar. It dates from 1535 to 1540 and is regarded as one of the first Renaissance altars built in Euskal Herria.
The last Saturday of the month is scheduled for guided tours of the Church of San Pedro de Ariznoa.
The church thus brings together evidence of an earlier sacred building, several historic construction phases and furnishings from different centuries.
Trails
The Cinturón Verde circular hiking trail has the designation SL-GI 38. It is approximately 9.225 kilometres long, starts at the Centro de Agorrosin and takes about 1 hour and 44 minutes.
The Dolmen Route PR-GI 94 can be reached from Bergara via the Arane district. It leads towards Soraluze or Elgoibar. A circular route variant leads back to Bergara.
The Elosua-Plazentzia megalithic station is protected under Basque law as a cultural asset of special interest. It belongs to the “Monument Group” category.
Elosua-Plazentzia comprises a total of 16 monuments. Of these, 10 are tumuli and 6 are dolmens.
Bergara is one of the possible starting points for exploring the Vasco-Navarro Greenway.
Traditions
The Larrañaga, Mujika and Raizabal pastry shops are over a hundred years old. They maintain Bergara’s local baking tradition with famous handmade tostones and rellenos.
Tostones are biscuits. Rellenos are fillings. Both names are therefore directly associated with the traditional baking heritage of the pastry shops mentioned.
At the Romería de San Marcial, the traditional Aurresku is danced at midday on the Sunday after the saint’s feast day. If the feast day itself falls on a public holiday, the dance takes place on the feast day.
In the evening, at 21:00, the descent into the village begins, accompanied by Txistulari, Trikitilari and Charanga music.
The festival programme thus combines a set time for the dance with a later descent into the village accompanied by music.
