Zubialde is the civic and administrative center of Zeberio. The NER12 route runs through parts of the town center; it also passes through Ermitabarri and reaches Albitzu-Undurraga.
Hiking
The NER12 follows a winding route with many shaded sections. Its course passes through residential, transport-related, rural and natural environments in Zeberio. This means that the route includes different local and landscape areas within the same municipality. The sections through parts of the town center are complemented by those through Ermitabarri and onward to Albitzu-Undurraga.
The PR 11 circular hiking trail is 17 kilometers long, starts in Zubialde Square and ends there as well. At Apala, this trail offers a shorter variant. The length of the circular trail and its fixed starting and ending point give it a clear spatial framework; the shorter variant at Apala forms a separate option within the route. Zubialde Square is therefore named as both the starting and ending point of the circular trail, while Apala represents the shortened variant within the route.
Culture and History
Zubialde Square is home to the deconsecrated Ermita de San Antolín y San Roque. Its former portico now serves as a shop. The current use of the portico is presented alongside the history of the building and does not describe its original function.
The Ermita was built from 1964 onward as a parish church, but it never took on this function and was downgraded to a chapel after its completion. The chronology therefore remains an essential part of its history: construction with an intended parish function was followed first by no use as a parish church and subsequently by its downgrading to a chapel. Its designation as deconsecrated and the current use of the former portico belong to the later development of the building, while its planned function as a parish church had already been established when it was built.
The Museo Diocesano De Arte Sacro is a museum in the wider surrounding region of Zubialde. The Bilboko Euskal Museoa is also located in this wider surrounding region, a museum with its own name and collection. The Museo de Arqueología is another museum there. The Palacio De Yohn is a palace in the wider surrounding region of Zubialde. The four institutions mentioned are therefore located in the wider surrounding region of Zubialde and belong to different museum or building categories: sacred art, Basque culture, archaeology and a palace.
Mountain Landscape
Pagasarri is a mountain in the wider surrounding region of Zubialde. Ganekogorta is also a mountain there. Artxanda likewise belongs to the wider surrounding region of Zubialde as a mountain. Gorbeia is a mountain in the vicinity of Zubialde.
Square and Orientation
As part of the introduction of the PR 11, an information board was installed in Zubialde Square. The board’s connection to the introduction of the circular trail is therefore directly linked to the square and to the PR 11.
Other places include Orozko, Güeñes, Garai, Ermua, Ea, Areatza, Kanpantxu and Zierbena.
