Zierbena on the Basque Coast
In Zierbena, Kantauri Fest presents traditional boats in the port and invites visitors to take part in the activities associated with them. The festival begins with the crews’ descent from the Nuestra Señora Virgen del Puerto hermitage. Basque dances, bagpipers and live music accompany this descent. Stand-up paddleboarding is also offered in the port of Zierbena during Kantauri Fest.
Culture
With its fishing boats and leisure craft, the port of Zierbena retains a traditional maritime character. The coastal battery of Punta Lucero was built in the early 1940s and decommissioned at the end of the 1970s.
Kantauri Fest brings the port, the crews and the Nuestra Señora Virgen del Puerto hermitage together in a set sequence of events. The traditional boats are just as much part of this scene as the musical accompaniment and the stand-up paddleboarding offered in the port. Culture, maritime history and a specific activity come together here in one place.
Nature
Playa de La Arena stretches along the coast of Zierbena and the neighbouring municipality of Muskiz. The beach is almost one kilometre long. Beneath the beach’s dunes are the foundations of a cableway that no longer exists. It transported iron ore from La Arboleda to the washing facilities at Campomar.
The coastline of Playa de La Arena thus connects the present-day beach with traces of earlier use. The dunes preserve the foundations of the former facility, while the transport route mentioned recalls the route once taken by the iron ore. In this same stretch of coast, landscape and industrial history therefore lie directly alongside each other.
Trails
A signposted trail to Punta Lucero begins in the La Cuesta district. Green arrows mounted at ground level mark the route. The summit of Punta Lucero offers views of Playa de La Arena.
The trail to Punta Lucero reveals the town’s military architectural and landscape heritage. Zierbena is regarded as a strategic point on the Basque Coast. Two bidegorris connect Zierbena with Santurtzi and Portugalete; the routes can be used on foot or by bicycle.
One of the bidegorri routes coincides with the Camino del Norte to Santiago de Compostela and ends opposite Playa de La Arena.
The trails thus provide access to both the La Cuesta district and the summit of Punta Lucero, while also creating connections beyond Zierbena. Where it coincides with the Camino del Norte, the route continues towards Santiago de Compostela; its end lies opposite Playa de La Arena.

The various points of interest around the town give this coastal location a clearly recognisable connection between port, beach and hills. In the port, the boats and festival events are the focus; along the coast lie the long beach and traces of the iron ore transport route, while Punta Lucero brings together the trail, views and military heritage.
