Osma: Oiz, waterfalls and rural Mallabia

Osma is a district of Mallabia, whose surroundings are characterised by rural landscapes and prominent high-altitude destinations. Mallabia lies at the foot of the 1,026-metre-high Oiz mountain and has a distinctly rural character. A route from the Osma district in Mallabia reaches the summit of Oiz at 1,026 metres. This connects the small local setting with a specific mountain route and a clearly named destination at an altitude of 1,026 metres.

Landscape and routes

Near Osma lies Oitz, a mountain. Other landscape destinations in the surrounding area include Azkonabieta, a summit, Untzillatx, a mountain, and Alluitz, a summit. The different designations point to a varied succession of mountains and summits, without implying that they form a uniform type of terrain.

Water also shapes individual sections of the routes. Near the source of the Oiz stream there is a first waterfall. Another waterfall is located where the Oiz stream meets a neighbouring stream. The two locations therefore mark different points along the watercourse: one at the source area and the other where two streams meet.

The circular route between Ermua and Mallabia runs through rural landscapes with farmhouses and forests. It also passes the Errekalde recreational area, where swimming is possible in summer. Farmhouses, forest sections and the recreational area thus form part of the same described circular route, while the possibility of swimming is limited to the summer.

Culture and festivities

Mallabia has numerous hermitages, around which festivities are held. In mid-August, Mallabia celebrates Marian festivities in which rural sports play an important role. For those interested in culture, these combine religiously significant sites with a festival date and sporting traditions of rural life.

There are also several specific cultural destinations in the area around Osma. Kurutzesantu Museoa is a museum, as is the Museo de la Industria Armera. Palacio Esteibar-Arauna and Palacio Lariz are palaces. The museums and palaces therefore form two clearly distinguishable groups among the destinations mentioned, while the hermitages and Marian festivities complement the local celebrations.

Routes and transport

The road between the Trabakua pass, the Osma district and the municipality of Berriz forms part of the return journey of the route described. There is a bus stop at the junction of Osma and Mallabia near the BI-633. For routes with fixed sections, the course of the road, the return journey and named stops help to consider the individual stages separately. Current route conditions for the circular route and the Oiz route can be checked before departure; for the Marian festivities, the respective event dates are decisive.
