Güeñes – River Valley, Art and History

Güeñes lies in a narrow river valley crossed by the Cadagua. Steep slopes flank the valley; at the same time, sandstone, limestone and marly materials alternate. The river, terrain and rocks shape the valley; paths, cultural sites and traces of history are closely interwoven in this landscape. Landscape and Paths

The Ruta del Cadagua encompasses Sodupe and Güeñes and leads to the places along their riverside surroundings. Its focus is on social history and culture, traditional crafts and trade, gastronomy, and architectural heritage. In this way, the route connects different facets of the valley without losing sight of individual buildings or the course of the river. The route brings together the riverside landscape, local history, traditional crafts, trade, gastronomy and architectural heritage along a single itinerary. A cycle path connects the municipality of Güeñes with ARENATZarte.

Art and Architecture

ARENATZarte is a public space for avant-garde art in a botanical garden next to Villa Urrutia. The combination of garden, art and historic architecture gives this cultural site a distinctive spatial character. Villa Urrutia was built in 1910 as the Urrutia family's summer residence and now houses Güeñes Town Hall. Its former function and present-day municipal use are therefore part of its history.

The Church of Santa María in Güeñes was built in the 16th century. The Renaissance palace of Ametzaga in Güeñes is also part of the historic landscape and is a sight worth visiting. Together, the dated buildings span the period from the 15th-century fortress architecture and the 16th-century church to the villa built in 1910.

Historic Traces

Along the Camino de Santiago, La Quadra in Güeñes is a point of reference. The Torre de los Salcedo, a former site of the banderizo wars, is located there. The Torre de La Quadra, by contrast, is a 15th-century fortress that played an important role in the banderizo wars. Both towers are connected with this historic conflict, but represent different architectural and historical functions.

Nature and Festivals

Arenaza Park offers a place to rest and enjoy nature. At the end of July, Güeñes celebrates its patron saint festivities in honor of San Ignacio. A farming, crafts and livestock fair takes place on Saint Joseph's Day. The dates have different focuses: the park represents a peaceful break in nature, while the festivals bring together religious tradition, agriculture, crafts and livestock.

FEVE and Bizkaiabus are located about 300 metres from the municipal Santxosolo hostel.
