Cultural history around the castle and church

Butrón Castle is located in the municipality of Gatika. Originally, it was a tower house and served as the residence of the Butrón family. The castle is closed to visitors, but its history remains a distinctive part of Gatika’s cultural character. The Iglesia de Santa María de Gatika provides another historical focal point. It dates from the 16th century and has a Neoclassical apse from the 17th century.

The Mesa de la Anteiglesia has been preserved in the spacious portico of the Iglesia de Santa María de Gatika. For centuries, the inhabitants of Gatika gathered there to settle matters of common interest. The church stands on a hill overlooking the river floodplain. Architectural history, communal tradition and expansive views of the landscape therefore come together directly in this place.
