Murueta between the Urdaibai Marshes and Mill Culture

Murueta combines impressive views of the Urdaibai Marshes with a remarkable history of milling and a hiking route leading to historical sights. The town itself and its immediate surroundings also feature museums, beaches and other notable destinations, bringing together natural and cultural attractions within a compact area.

Culture

One particularly vivid testament to the town's history is the Mallukitza Mill in Murueta. The lintel above its entrance door bears an inscription from 1796 with the words “Viva Jesús y el dulce nombre de María Santísima”. The surviving building of the two-bay Mallukitza Mill bears the name Itsas-Errota. Its defining architectural features include a large weir and a bridge made from a single large stone slab. No remnants of the milling equipment have survived.

The traditional town centre also brings together several notable buildings and spaces: the church, town hall, frontón and village square are located right next to one another. In the vicinity of Murueta are the Museo De La Paz De Gernika, the Euskal Herria Museoa and the Parque de los Pueblos de Europa museum. The Palace of Larrínaga is also located in the surroundings of Murueta, while the Mallukitza Mill stands in the town itself. Landscape

Hiking and Getting Around

The Ruta Juradera includes Murueta and can be travelled by bicycle, bus or car. The PR BI 178 hiking route offers another way to combine movement with local history. It lists the Tejera de Murueta, the former brickworks of Murueta, as a point of interest. The route also lists the Church of Santa María de Murueta as a point of interest. It therefore leads to two different historical destinations: the former brickworks and the Church of Santa María de Murueta.
