Gordejuela: Towers, Villas and Holiday Apartments

Gordejuela is home to the late Gothic Torre de Oxirando, which dates from the end of the 15th century, has a square floor plan and is divided into three storeys.

Culture and Architecture

The Church of San Juan de Molinar is recognised as a Monument of Bizkaia. Its Baroque high altar features depictions of angels and Saint John the Evangelist, as well as a Gothic depiction of Our Lady of Isasi. Various concerts are held in the church at Christmas and at other times of the year.

Villa Cuba was built in 1885 and completely remodelled in the Neo-Baroque style at the beginning of the 20th century. It has a garden with a pergola and a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1931, it was completely remodelled by the architect José María de Basterra, who combined Baroque and Renaissance references in his own interpretation of Neo-Baroque.

The Torre Ybargoen was built around the 16th century; the cubic building now has four storeys. The Torre de Largatxa is a tower with a hall in the Gothic-Renaissance style, built in the early years of the 16th century and therefore certainly after 1500. The Torre de Urtusaustegi is described as the lowest tower of its kind in the region. It stands in the middle section of the floodplain of the Zaldu River, on its right bank; a farmhouse was probably added to its main façade in the 17th century.

The Palacio Puente Palacio is a Baroque residential palace built in the 18th century, with a roughly 400 m² rectangular floor plan. At the entrance to the Gordexola valley, coming from Sodupe, stands the 19th-century Palacio Ubieta. After the first bridge in Gordexola, you can visit the Zubiete complex, consisting of a defensive tower and a palace.

Along Calle Sandamendi is a residential ensemble of fifteen villas built by returnees from America, which stands out for the quality and variety of its architecture.
