Bilbao: Avant-Garde, Old Town and Museums

Bilbao combines striking architecture with historic urban spaces and a diverse museum landscape. The Guggenheim Bilbao building was designed by Frank Gehry and is considered an example of avant-garde architecture of the 20th century. At the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, presentations from the permanent collection are shown alongside temporary exhibitions. As a result, architecture, long-term collections and changing exhibition themes come together in different cultural forms.

Architecture, Art and History

Another important building is the Teatro Arriaga. The city architect Joaquín Rucoba designed the theater; it was built between 1886 and 1890. Casco Viejo, also known as Siete Calles, forms the historic heart of Bilbao. This city center includes the arcades of Plaza Nueva, which house numerous cafés.

The Museo Arqueológico de Vizcaya y Etnográfico Vasco opened on July 3, 1921, in the cloister of the former Colegio de San Andrés. The collection of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao ranges from old masters to modern and contemporary art. It also includes works from the Spanish and Flemish schools as well as works by Basque artists. The AC Museoa presents more than a century of Athletic Club history through original objects, audiovisual media and interactive games. In this way, historic spaces, art from different periods and the history of the club come together in Bilbao, without the individual institutions sharing the same cultural profile.

Mountains, Trails and Beaches

Artxanda is a mountain in the immediate vicinity of Bilbao. A GR hiking trail crosses the Artxanda Forest Park and complements the mountain as a specific starting point for exploring the landscape. The Funicular de Artxanda has been operating in Bilbao for more than 100 years; at the same time, it is an attractive means of transport. For hiking trails, current trail conditions should be checked, while for a journey by rail, the applicable operating times are decisive.

Pagasarri is a mountain in the area around Bilbao. The beaches of Playa Areeta and Ereaga are also nearby. The landscape therefore extends from the surrounding mountains to named beaches, while Artxanda is additionally characterized by its forest park, hiking trail and funicular.

Other destinations include Nabarniz, Sopuerta, Plentzia, Mallabia, Laukiz, Güeñes, Zierbena and Bakio.
