Verdera: Cultural Heritage, Trails and Cider

Verdera can be described through named cultural sites, traditional route connections and landscape features. The Necrópolis de San Vicente de Verdera is listed under code IPCA-YA-40-028 in Asturias’s cultural heritage inventory. The Riega la Canal stream crosses Verdera and a large part of the neighbouring parish of Cuenya before flowing into the Ríu Bustiellu, a tributary of the Piloña. Culture and History

According to tradition, the former San Vicente chapel stood on the upper meadows of San Vicenti, near the old royal road from San Román to Verdera, south of El Corralón. The former San Vicente chapel is credited with contributing to the Christianisation of the area of the parishes of San Andrés de Cuenya in Nava and San Román in Sariego.

El Camín Rial, also known as El Camín de Verdera, leads from the Carretera L'Enguilu via La Pumará Riba and from La Figarona and La Pumará Baxo via El Camblor up to La Portellona; it runs along the slope near Casa la Mariñana and L'Arquera. In its traditional name, the route connects several specific landscape points.

Trails

The “Camino de Salgues a San Román por el Corralón (Verdera)” trail is listed as 0.8 km long. The mountain bike route “Ruteando por Nava Siero y Sariego pasando por Picu Fariu” starts in the village of Naveto de Verdera; the first climb follows a concrete track.

After departing Verdera, the published sequence continues with Cesa and then Cuenya. The Museo de la Sidra, a museum, is located in the vicinity of Verdera. In the municipality of Nava, the Museo de la Sidra uses a participatory exhibition to provide information about the production, consumption and history of cider, as well as its social and cultural context.

The Festival de la Sidra Natural takes place in the municipality of Nava. It includes competitions for cider and cider pourers, as well as numerous activities centred on apples, cider, and Asturian culture and traditions; its programme is renewed every year.
