Vegadeo: River Landscapes, Hiking Trails and Historic Sites
Vegadeo combines riverside areas, historic paths and remarkable buildings. The SL-AS 21 Ruta del Estraperlo follows a historic route once used by pilgrims on the Way of St. James and smugglers who transported goods from Galicia to Asturias. Along the banks of the Eo, the same path offers views of the wildlife and vegetation of the Ría del Eo.
Nature and Trails
The Senda del Río Eo connects Miou and Louteiro as a circular hiking route and begins and ends in A Veiga/Vegadeo. It passes through meadows and small riverside woodlands to a natural viewpoint overlooking the Ría del Eo. It then reaches a recreational area on the estuary, where a wooden walkway leads to a landing stage; benches and tables are also available there. The Ría del Eo is a refuge for waterbirds and is designated both as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). Migratory and resident birds, including herons, cormorants and curlews, find habitat along the route, which is suitable for birdwatching.
The PR-AS 263 Senda Verde de As Minas begins in A Espía (Vegadeo) and includes a circular section of approximately 8.7 km. An optional 4.3 km linear section continues to Pico Bedures. The different distances make it easy to compare route-planning options. The Senda Verde also passes an historic mine adit and offers views of the sea and the surrounding settlements. The Ruta del Mazo de Meredo follows the Suarón towards the Ría del Eo, which is considered to have significant ecological and ornithological value. The SL-AS 107 Ruta del Mazo de Meredo leads through a deep eucalyptus forest with chestnut trees, holm oaks and laurels; numerous streams accompany it. The GR-204 Senda Tapia-Vegadeo ends in A Veiga/Vegadeo at A Galea, at the level of the primary school located there.
The El Noveledo recreational area lies by the river. It has a small bathing area, nearby parking, a children's playground, tables, seating and several barbecue facilities.
Culture and History
The Mazo de Meredo complex comprises a traditional forge, a grain mill and a sharpening wheel. These elements are powered by water diverted from the Suarón River. The three-nave Iglesia de Santiago de Abres dates from the 15th century and was remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries. Inside, it preserves several Baroque-style altarpieces as well as two depictions of Saint James as a knight and as a pilgrim. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Vegadeo was inaugurated in 1854 and has three interior naves.
At the entrance to Vegadeo on the N-640 stands the Caleiro La Sorpresa, an industrial lime kiln from the late 19th century. In its former location at the mouth of the Suarón beside former landing stages, it facilitated the export of lime to various places along the Cantabrian coast. The Palacio de Vixande, also known as Casa de Lastra, was a centre of trade and the transport business of carters from the 16th to the 19th century. The Iglesia de Santa María de Paramios has an original structure dating from the 12th century; its present architectural form was created between the 16th and 18th centuries. The historic townscape is complemented by the Quiosco de la Música, an octagonal bandstand built in 1903 in the Modernist style.
