Nature and Trails

In Siero, the 7-km Senda Fluvial del Río Nora runs along the banks of the Nora River through a predominantly flat, peri-urban landscape; it is frequently used by the residents of Pola de Siero. The route can optionally be extended by 2 km, and the round trip takes approximately 3.5 hours. It is considered very easy as far as Los Corros and easy as far as Lieres. In Pola de Siero, the Senda can be started near the FEVE railway station. The Senda de Celles begins at Plaza Les Campes in Pola de Siero. The stone Puente de Romanón stands on the Senda Fluvial del Río Nora, recalling the route of a Roman road. The Camino de Santiago runs in front of the parish church in La Pola Siero.

Events

The Concurso-Exposición Regional de Ganado Vacuno takes place every year in mid-September on the grounds of the Mercado Nacional de Ganados de Pola de Siero. The Certamen-Exposición Agrosiero is held annually at the same venue at the same time.

History

The market of La Pola Siero dates back to the Carta Puebla. It was granted to the residents of Siero by King Alfonso X on 14 August 1270; with it, he authorized a weekly market. The medieval hospital of Pola de Siero was named Los Santos Mártires de San Fabián y San Sebastián. It stood near the parish church, at the corner of Calle Marquesa de Canillejas and Celleruelo. The parish church of San Pedro de Pola de Siero was finally opened for worship on 6 February 1870, following the approval of restoration funds in 1867.

Markets and Museum

A weekly market is held every Tuesday around Plaza Cubierta in La Pola Siero. Agricultural surpluses as well as fruit, dried fruit and flowers are offered there. In the La Isla area, there is also a street market selling textiles, handicrafts and small decorative items.

The La Cotorra siphon factory in Pola de Siero was founded at the beginning of the 20th century. It no longer operates as a production facility, but its collection of siphons has been preserved as the Museo del Sifón. The Museo del Sifón – La Cotorra contains more than 15,000 siphons from places of origin including London, Paris, Poland and Argentina. The various styles also include examples from the 19th century.
